Goddamnit lady you know I ain’t lyin’ to ya I’m only gonna tell you one time-yaaaaaaaa!

I honestly have nothing for you today. Sorry brodies. It’s a three day weekend and I’m getting the fuuuuuuuck outta here. We’ll run a post or two on Monday. Otherwise, we’ll be back for your regular schedule on Tuesday. Thank you for your continued support of this particular online privy. This is your open swim for the week. The floor is yours.

  • Good: finally able to bike to work instead of driving after a long shitty Newfoundland winter.

Good, two: Assault’s “The Fallen Reich.” Been jamming this shit all week.

Good as well: overall anxiety level is lower lately and I’m able to spend my non-work time doing useful/fun shit like playing guitar/writing music or playing old NES games or reading. Yeah boiiiiiii.

  • Joaquin Stick

Off work early, just finished making some pizza dough from scratch while blasting Fallujah (maybe too loud, my neighbor is now trying to battle me with some funk), going to buy some semolina to make pasta from scratch on Monday, I’m gettin’ fat as fuck this weekend!

    • So the missus was out thrift shoppin’ today and found DFW’s “Consider the Lobster” for me for $2.

      • Joaquin Stick

Sweet! There are some good essays in there. I was actually at an airport book store and found his biography in the bargain bin so I picked that up. Highly recommended if you ever get further into his works. It gets really in depth on just about everything he wrote as well as all the personal stuff.

        • Nice! She also bought me Jean-Paul Sartre’s “Being and Nothingness” for $2 because she knows I have a bunch of his novels. Not sure if I’m ready for his wacky philosophical shit haha. Deadly ol’ thrifting today nonetheless.

  • JWG

Wait. What? Last weekend was a long weekend. Did I accidentally take the wrong Monday off?

    Oh…

Well, okay then. Lucky Americans get away with taking two Remembrance Days, I have to go to work. It just isn’t fair.

  • Windham Earle

I am not looking forward to hiking from Boston to Bangor tomorrow, despite the fact that I’ll be seeing my best friend for the first time in almost 5 years.

Good: hanging w/bff and seeing Tool
Bad: 2 hour bus ride followed by 2 hour car ride followed(after concert) by another 2(potentially 4) hour car ride
Ugly: The show is at an outdoor venue, and it’s only gonna be 55F at best by the time Tool comes on.

    • Eliza

Seeing Tool live, that must be really nice.

      • Windham Earle

Oh, it is, very much so. This will be my 11th time seeing them. Once again, they will be tied with Rush for “band I’ve seen the most”.

      • Windham Earle

This was the 1st time I saw them.
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKI8gjA5BrU

        • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Apparently their really old shows, in the Opiate days, were pretty damn crazy.

          • Windham Earle

The 1992 shows are much closer to straight-up Metal than the post-Aenima ones.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Probably because back then they kinda attracted an all-metal crowd.
Their insane rise to popularity will forever be a mystery to me, since their music for the most part doesn’t really feel like it’s “for the masses”. And another strange thing is, I don’t know how it’s like in the USA, but over here every “common civilian music listener” I know that ever heard Tool deemed it as “2 heavy 4 me” or “metal noise”.

    • Howard Dean

Yeah, it’s been a pretty shitty spring in northern New England. Cold and rainy. They got 33 inches of snow at Mount Washington in New Hampshire not even two weeks ago (5/15). Crazy.

      • Windham Earle

Where the hell is our Memorial Day weather? It’s supposed to be sunny and at least 70F.

        • Depechemodeisgangsta

Down here in Miami is going to be 93 Degrees the whole weekend.
But it’s the norm here, once May hits is basically Summer.

          • Windham Earle

Last week we had 3 days that ranged between 90-100F, and now it feels like March.

          • Depechemodeisgangsta

Damn that’s crazy, isn’t weather kind of crazy this weekend over there with the rain and storms?

          • Windham Earle

It’s not so much stormy right now, just kinda grey and bleh.

        • more beer

60’s and 70’s here all weekend but afternoon thunderstorms, which tend to bring hail with them this time of year.

      • Elegant Gazing Globe

dusting of snow in the Berkshire hills too

    • Wait, hold up. Tool in Bangor?

That’s a long haul though, man. I didn’t even like going to Bangor as a kid and I lived around Augusta.

      • Windham Earle

Yep, the only other local choice is the ridiculous festival going on in Allston(AKA Boston Calling) that they are headlining Sunday night.
I’m just lucky my friend enjoys driving.

        • Seriously. That’s a big commitment, even for Tool.

          • Windham Earle

I don’t mind saying that I am NOT looking forward to this. If it were anybody else but my best friend, I wouldn’t be doing it.

          • Windham Earle

My friend is a good, fast driver. If he says he can do the Windham-Bangor run in less than 2 hours, I believe him.

          • Windham Earle

I was panic attacking like a motherfucker yesterday over this. Now I’m fine.

    • Óðinn

      Enjoy the show.

      • Windham Earle

        Thanks. I will.
Honestly, getting to spend time with my friend is far more important. The show is just icing on the cake.

  • FrankWhiteKingOfNY
  • Eliza

I’ve finally gotten my laptop fixed and is definitely the best thing that happened this week. Also, I have nothing to stress about for school, so overall, things are going well. Music I’m listening to right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31jo5PybC4Y&list=PLf5lrbzEmn4r7FtOJ5Kw7b3ycFiBWflDr

      • Eliza

I’m glad to know someone agrees.

        • Windham Earle

I prefer Peter Gabriel(for that type of music), but yeah, she’s cool.

          • Eliza

I suppose you like their collaboration?

          • Windham Earle

“Don’t Give Up”? Yeah, that’s a cool tune.

          • Windham Earle

I also like the stuff on Gabriel’s ‘Us’ when he teams w/Sinead O’Connor, used to be a huge fan of her 1st two albums before she went round the bend a bit.

  • Guacamole Jim

I have to head to a fucking mandatory work meeting tomorrow. Eight hours of “efficiency training” that’s going to amount to absolutely nothing, since everyone will just do things how they’re doing them now anyway. Waste of a Saturday, and for no extra pay.

    • You must work for the same company I work for (the government).

      • Guacamole Jim

Nope, just a shitty hardware company that wants to pretend it’s big league when it’s basically a family business.

Awww man, you just can’t beat those early Peaseville Death/Doom albums from Anathama and Katatonia.

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

And the thing is, death/doom has turned into a rather widespread style nowadays, but I haven’t found another album that actually sounds like Serenades or Dance of December Souls. In their way, those albums are rather unique.

        • Al Bvndy

Paradise Lost – Gothic is another quality album from that time.

Good / Needs its own Post: The Sunrise Records location in town opened mid-week. So I’ve been already, obviously. Apart from having a minor quibble with the fact that they have one section for both Punk and Metal, I am otherwise impressed. The actual depth of the metal content is a major step up from HMV.ca – even though they have to pander a bit to the same guaranteed-sales content, it’s not quite as much the in-your-face majority of the collection.

Examples of latest albums HMV never would have had that Sunrise did: Gorod, Slugdge, Wormed.

Not that I bought any of them (see: availability on bandcamp instead). It’s just nice to see the “metal guy” on staff (retained from HMV) has been allowed to have a bigger impact on the in-store collection, and it’s not even the end of Week 1.

(on a similar note, it looks like they retained most of the staff from HMV (Mayfair), though not those who transferred there from the older HMV shop (Hillside) when it closed in 2016)

Their vinyl is prominently displayed, though mixed (not big enough to do genre-by-genre). Was nice to see a special display just of Chris Cornell/Soundgarden vinyl, though.

The film section looked sparse but I was promised it was going to multiply in size once they got the niche suppliers sorted out (what was there was just the blockbuster level stuff). Some of it has already been announced on the website, so it’ll be in stores shortly. I’m looking forward to resuming building my Scream Factory collection in store rather than from online sources, for instance.

  • Elegant Gazing Globe

G: Three day weekend of course
B: I have to waste several hours tomorrow going to a stupid campground to see the stupid campsite that my aunts-in law bought sight unseen, because my wife thinks that someday we actually might go there.
U: Said campground was OBLITERATED by a tornado a few years ago. Some vids on youtube expose that it’s now just a trailer park in a bare field. I’m praying to Satan that my aunts-in law get there(tomorrow will be their first time going there too) and decide that their “alternative lifestyle” and their brand new $100k RV does not fit in with the year round trailer trash that lives there, and turn right around and cancel the trip. Please Satan, please.

    • Howard Dean

Not a fan of campgrounds at all. I’d rather save the money on the overpriced RV and the yearly memberships and just buy a cabin or a piece of land somewhere. Camping like that sucks.

      • Elegant Gazing Globe

These ladies have no clue what they’re in for. It’s one of those “co-op” private campgrounds where people actually live year round, not a real, awesome State Forest campground. It’s about par for the course for them though… these fools bought this old dodge conversion van that is now mine, sight unseen too. They got hosed for $5700 on this thing, never drove it, never had a mechanic look at it, just bought it because they thought they would camp in it. But one Aunt is a colossal fucking wimp and would not get into the thing because once they got it home they realized it wasn’t what they thought. They tried and tried to sell it and make their money back but no buyers, so they just gave it to me, which is the only upside to this story at this point. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/29cc92d9363f1578cae3e4588fc8c787dda1e3d8a91202ab56369c6c1e47907f.jpg

The CORRECT holiday, May Two-Four, was last weekend. Your boasts are meaningless to me.

The Good: uuuh I dunno. I’ve been enjoying R. Scott Bakker’s The Aspect-Emperor series lately?
The Bad: It’s the end of May and we haven’t seen the sun since April. This planet is fucked.
The Ugly: I have to work tomorrow fuck me fuck you fuck everyone.

    • more beer

You seem mixed up. Our holidays are the correct ones. You guys are lucky we even recognize Canada as a country.

  • Waynecro

Bad: My father died suddenly Monday afternoon.

    • oh fuck. that’s so bad. i’m so sorry.

      • Waynecro

Thanks, man. My dog and my dad were good pals. My dog keeps sitting and staring into my dad’s office at my mom’s house. It’s the saddest fucking thing I’ve ever seen.

    • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Dude…that’s so bad. My deepest condolences.

      • Waynecro

        Thanks very much.

    • Guacamole Jim

Very sorry to hear that man. I hope you and the rest of your family are holding up okay.

      • Waynecro

We’re doing our best. My dad had a really offbeat sense of humor, so we’re all trying to joke around a lot. But I had to edit my dad’s obituary, and that shit wrecked me.

        • Guacamole Jim

I can’t even imagine how hard that must have been. Glad to hear you’re able to honour his spirit, though.

          • Waynecro

            We’re all doing our best.

    • Eliza

I’m sorry to hear that. My condolences.

      • Waynecro

        Thank you.

        • Eliza

I wish you only the best.

          • Waynecro

            I really appreciate that.

Remember your time together and cherish it. My condolences.

      • Waynecro

        Definitely. Thank you.

    • Elegant Gazing Globe

Condolences to you, your family, and friends of your father

      • Waynecro

Thank you. My dad was awesome, so even the staff at the place my parents drank beer every Sunday are bummed as shit.

    • Señor Jefe El Rossover

This is truly a sad day on the toilet, my deepest, most sincere condolences to you and your family. I will drink to his honor this night.

      • Waynecro

Thanks, man. I really appreciate that. My dad loved good stout beers, and I can’t have a drink (or ten) for him myself.

        • Señor Jefe El Rossover

He was a hero, a warrior and from what I’ve heard a great man and father. I can’t guarantee 10, but my glass is raised.

          https://youtu.be/XvMcHWNX5_g

          • Waynecro

Thanks again, dude. He was one of the best people I ever met. You’re right, though. I don’t think even he’d drink ten beers (he’d probably switch to hard liquor after three or four).

          • Señor Jefe El Rossover

Haha! A man that knew what he wanted in life. If you need to talk anytime, you know how to get in touch.

          • Waynecro

I appreciate that. Thanks very much.

    • I’m so sorry, dude 🙁

      • Waynecro

Thank you. I’m certainly trying to hang in there.

    • My sincerest condolences, man. I and all of us here are with you. For what it’s worth, I’ll do a special kindness meditation for you and yours tomorrow.

      • /offtopic

        how did you enjoy Opeth/Gojira/Devin????

        • Oh man, it was a fantastic show! I hadn’t been to Red Rocks for a show in 6 years (coincidentally, the last one I saw there was Soundgarden). Anyway, me and my buddy were there primarily for Gojira, who absolutely destroyed it. The pyrotechnics didn’t hurt. Devin played very well despite my lack of knowledge of his stuff, and Opeth was Opeth; their performance was excellent if a little lacking in energy. Factor in the setting and a beautiful bright orange moonrise over the rocks, and it was an excellent night. Boss was out the next day too so dragging at work wasn’t a huge issue.

          • Sounds like my experience. Gojira was really hitting their stride. They fucking tore it up. Damn! Devin was off, to me. I guess I was surprised he only played for 35mins. What a great show.

      • Waynecro

Thank you very much. I really appreciate that.

    • The Tetrachord of Archytas

Dang dude, I’m so sorry to hear that. I think it’s clear that everyone here appreciates your presence and mourns with you. May you find peace, friend

I’m really sorry, Waynecro. As someone who is really close to his Dad, I don’t even want to imagine what it must be like to lose him. Lots of love to you and your family

      • Waynecro

Thanks very much. My parents are my best friends and pretty much the only people I choose to hang out with. This sucks more than I can express in words, and I know a metric shit ton of words.

    • My condolences man, friends and family will see you through this.

      • Waynecro

        Thanks, Deucebro.

    • Óðinn

Shit. Sorry to hear that, Waynecro.

GOOD: Listening to the new Swans live album and revisiting The Glowing Man. Goddamn these are powerful pieces of music.

    BAD: Eh.

    UGLY: Meh.

    • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Whenever I want some dark stuff that isn’t metal, Swans are at the top of my list.

      • Riboflavin dreams

Hot take: I don’t think a lot of Swans is as dark as people think it is. There’s a lot of positive. A lot of The Glowing Man I feel is positive. They’re like mantras to god-like forces that empower you.

        • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

To be honest, I don’t think “dark” is a good description either. I think Swans have a vibe that can only be described as “Swans”. I wouldn’t put on The Seer after taking some shrooms though…

This weekend down here is going to be crazy, since South Beach wants to basically get rid of the Hip Hop Weekend, now they’re going to do an areal show, to try to get more of a “Different crowd”
The only “bad thing” that happened this week was that they move they move the Paul Mccartney concert as the same day to Metallica, so i had to get rid of the Paul ticket, since i never seen Metallica.

    • Óðinn

What exactly goes on there? Is it just a venue for country music/concerts?

      • Windham Earle

It’s probably the most famous Country Music venue ever. Getting to play there is like getting to headline Madison Square Garden, only harder to accomplish.

      • Windham Earle
      • J.R.™

Its less of a concert and more of a tv show. Four 30 minute segments, lots of famous country musicians (usually super old ones and a couple new) and they just rotate out and play a song or two. Ricky Skaggs was there last night. Everyone was there for this thin little hyper dude and his modern day pop country, but the bluegrass guys were far superior. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/d2f53d0ce5c2ead2d9b6c467a9075a06b589413f820728dfd0f48d6551f89b39.jpg

        • Windham Earle

Bluegrass playing takes some serious skills.

        • Óðinn

So it’s similar to Austin City Limits. More about a performance series than the actual venue itself. Thanks.

Good: finally putting all of my cds into my laptop. Hello, updated iTunes library.
Also, my brother is coming to town this weekend. He’s the only other person in my family who listens to metal and enjoys hiking, so I’m stoked as fuck.
I’m also attending a wedding, so I get to parade around all fancied up for the day, before returning to my normal, slightly sloppy self.

Bad: I attempted to dye my hair to a darker shade of brown… it is now black as night, and my hands are stained as well. it’s an outdoor wedding and forecasts call for rain all day, after a week of rain. Good thing I like mud.
