Ephel Duath Is No More

Frontman Davide Tiso has opted to put an end to the band.

Scrolling through my news feed on Friday morning I found this unexpected announcement on Ephel Duath’s Facebook page:

Today I decided that it’s time to put Ephel Duath to rest.

This beautiful beast has been my life companion for a very long time, I cannot see it struggling any longer and I decided to kill it myself. This post is a way to make peace with the idea itself and, I guess, a way to keep you part of this.

For many years I felt conflicted with the idea of sharing Ephel Duath’s music with its small public, now it’s time to let go.
Ephel Duath changed shape and color many times, crossing different genres and musical styles, toward the end though, it started looking too much like me and I didn’t feel like giving it to you any longer. This is the reason why this has to end, because this band mattered so much to me that I didn’t get any joy in letting it be heard and dissected by you any longer.

As I’ve never really found a comfortable place for myself in this society, my music has always experienced the same problem. Ephel Duath never quite reached a large public and it never really exploited its potential. I suffered for that but what I know is that I’ve tried my very best to make this band work and I stand behind every record we released.

When I started Ephel Duath I was young, naive and tremendously ambitious. Now I’m 16 years older, and still naive enough to think that songs have their own souls, I just poured too much of my own in them, and it has been brutal to let them go. A part of me was let go. A big chunk. In the end, I’m not sure it was worth it.

I’ve a gift that I cherish deeply, I can talk through my guitar. It’s easy for me to distill my feelings through riffs and everything I say that way has more weight and impact than my own words. In order to keep honoring that in the future, Ephel Duath needs to die today and so it will be.

Thanks for reading,

I could do a long list of thanks but I choose not, now it’s my time to be ungrateful.

Davide Tiso

This is a bummer considering I just recently got to listen to last year’s Hemmed by Light, Shaped by Darkness and was really digging it. Tiso seems like an intense dude, and his reasons are understandable despite coming off as a tad eccentric. Even if he never records anything again, the five albums released under the Ephel Duath moniker are a testament to his ambitious vision and more than enough to try and wrap one’s head around in a lifetime.

Thanks for the music, Davide.

Darn. Bummer. Still better to have awesomed and then not than never to have awesomed at all though.

    • Lacertilian

      Infinite Witches?

      • lacy boy, were you here for this? probably one of the top 10 jokes on the Toilet:

        • Lacertilian

Yeah man, Bummer quickly made it onto my phone playlist.
They’re my pick so far in the Unsigned Band Comp, definitely not an obvious pick for me but sometimes I really like the ‘No fucks given’ style.

      • Guest

were you around for this? one of the funniest jokes ever told…

  • NefariousDude

Listened to their album that was released this year and enjoyed it. Bummer. Which reminds me I MISS THE FUCK OUT OF ANIMOSITY

    • Lacertilian

Today I dreamt of life on earth and I boarded a train ready for the world.
Descending on the streets where the sky is scraped and the crowds collect.
Confused and alone I try to find my way.
My heart beat as I chased my life through the street.
      Walk with me.
Cold world, embrace me because I am lost in the chaos and I feel all alone.
      Nothing to call my own.
I fell in love today and it was the best thing I ever felt.
No more confusion about who I am because this is who I want to be.
I woke up with a purpose and I laughed back at the crowds drowning in modern bullshit.
I planted a tree in front of my home and I can no longer see out of my window but it makes me smile just to watch it grow.
And I opened my eyes to the beautiful things that make my world spin around.
Today I heard that another hundred men were killed.
Many people joined me in dismay and we crowded the streets.
Today everything was taken from me, stripped down to nothing but a bag of bones.
Today I ripped out my heart out of my chest and I stamped it into the earth.
My face turned to raw bone and I danced with the stars.
And the pages stopped turning in my passionate journey.
      They just couldn’t tame him.

“I spent 16 years in this band, I don’t think it was worth it. I don’t want you to listen to me or lile my music. It’s just not worth giving it to you, and not just because you’re ungrateful” Wow. Auch- that… hurt.

    • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

And a darn tooting sääli too. ‘Tis was a fine, fine band.

      • Death

Is this your new thing? Fusing our languages with english?

        • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

Could be, I don’t think I’ve done it tätä ennen.

I heard he quit the band to start giving lessons on how 2b void

      PICK ONE

      • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

I didn’t even notice that, lol.

    • BLVKKBEVRD’S FŒTID VBDVCTEES

To be frank, I have an album or two by them and his disingenuous goodbye sullies what respect I did have for him.

      • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

I’ve never much heard this band, but I’ve liked the little. Not exactly a good way to end a band though, even if I understand his need to do it.

        • BLVKKBEVRD’S FŒTID VBDVCTEES

Comes across as the kid who took his games and went home when you beat him.

        • VVorld Peace

He’s basically saying, “My music is too good for the unwashed masses.”

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

I’m not sure if that’s classy as hell, or just being a gargantuan douche.

          • Sounds of the “gargantuan douche” camp to me.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

I’m willing to lean a little on that side me’self

          • CT-12

Ehh, I dunno there; if you watch any interview with this dude, there’s not really any traceable lick of pretension about this man. This dude definitely puts everything he has into his music and I can understand him not wanting to kill himself making it and then receiving no real appreciation for it. If you watch the DVD included with the “Through my Dog’s Eyes” album, he talked at length about the difficulty that he faced with keeping the band alive and also about the few fans of E.D. did sometimes bitching about an album not sounding as crazy technical. I loved the man’s work and I wish him nothing but peace in his life, which hopefully will be more attainable now.

          • Akercocke ov Steele

            He’s just 2 void 4 u.

He and the girl dont look particularly well washed, themselves.

  • Janitor Jim Dvggan’s Spooky To

This makes me sad. On a happier note I found out that Tony Martin of Black Sabbath has a Facebook so I requested him. I hope he accepts it.

  • Death

Never been a huge fan, but they had some good sangs.

    • VVorld Peace

I really liked the musicianship on the last album, but the vocals were very off-putting for me.

      • Death

I think I have one of their albums. It was ok.

      • CT-12

Vox were actually the highlight of the last album for me. “Hemmed by Light…” didn’t grab me as much as some of their other albums, but definitely wasn’t one to ignore.

        • Lacertilian

          Seriously?
I have never heard vocals that off-putting atop good music and I have listened to Pathology.

          • MoshOff

            Off-putting vocals you say?
(This is not a parody, the dude is serious)

          • Max

Ahh, Ice JJ Fish. The only RnB singer who wasn’t privy to Autotune. A true hero.

I especially like the part of the video where Karen Vi is doing her dance moves while she’s still holding her phone. And then she suddenly stops dancing when she gets to the end of the bridge and realizes there’s a banister in her way. Even more next level than Solitary Son.

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan’s Spooky To

            I like Pathology.

          • Lacertilian

They have their moments but I can’t get into slam vocals.

          • CT-12

Different strokes, I found them pretty unique

          • Lacertilian

Fair enough, I found them unique too.
Unique like a mutant virus from the uncharted forests of Borneo.

  • The Satan Ov Hell

Off topic. How did other Death Grip fan toileteers feel about this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5GCn1BKkxg

    • VVorld Peace

      Loved it.

      • The Satan Ov Hell

At first the, for lack of a better word “EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE” made me think it was a joke someone posted on /mu/ because of their love of memes. Then MC ride. Enjoyed it a lot here too.

    • BLVKKBEVRD’S FŒTID VBDVCTEES

Actually haven’t listened to it yet, hip-hop had so many good releases this year. I like all the old Death Grips albums (Tachyon, anyone?)

      • The Satan Ov Hell

        OH SHIT I’M FEELIN IT

        • BLVKKBEVRD’S FŒTID VBDVCTEES

          fucking song rips and tears.

        • BLVKKBEVRD’S FŒTID VBDVCTEES

Upon listening to a little more of it, I dont quite enjoy it as much as some of his previous albums. Its almost a bit too erratic. Still Death Grips, though, for sure.

          • The Satan Ov Hell

Was a grower for me. The EEEEEEEE really works in hind sight.

  • “In the end, I’m not sure it was worth it.”
Then stop. It should be about self expression and enjoyment, or at least one of those. This just reeks of “we weren’t financially successful enough to keep going so I’m going to make it sound like our audience just didn’t ‘get it'”

    • BLVKKBEVRD’S FŒTID VBDVCTEES

Basically he’s blaming what little audience he did have for his own failures as a person and songwriter.

    • Death

In the end, it doesn’t even matter

      • Lacertilian

        *vomits uncontrollably*

  • Nine Inch Males

I guess it makes sense. I imagine it would be heartbreaking to pour your soul into album after album, only to receive a collective “cool bro” from the listeners. His stuff always seemed particularly under-appreciated among similar bands. I’m sure he didn’t expect mass popularity in this genre, but the public’s ambivalence has gotta sting nonetheless. The relentlessly hardworking musicians are rightfully admired, but who are we to criticize if he’s had enough?

    Damn! I loved this band.

Said it before: Got hooked on Painter’s Palette, noone expected that after the Dimmu-fellating first one. “A Pain…” was good. Doggy was horribad. And then it just went the route of “Meh”.

“Ephel Duath never quite reached a large public and it never really exploited its potential. I suffered for that but what I know is that I’ve tried my very best to make this band work and I stand behind every record we released” Well, if you want to go further than moving that oh so heavy pool table out of the way, maybe you should get into something a little more, not too much, but just a hair more than post avant-garde depressive blackened jazz punk.

  • KJM

I just read this “statement”. Jeez guy, full of yourself much?

And yeah, I’m sure if his music was selling more he’d keep his bullshit pretensions in check.

  • My 7 year old son used to love this band.

  • Mother Shabubu III

Sad to see him put Ephel Duath down. Their music always took me somewhere when I listened to it, but as they say, all journeys come to an end.

  • Sadistikexekution

    Bye!

  • tertius_decimus

“The painter’s palette” was awesome and “Pain necessary to know” was great too. Other releases didn’t speak to me, but I always appreciated their outside-the-box approach. Pity that they go away.

    My favorite song.
