Oh man, you guys… Godflesh! Lustmord! Author & Punisher! Noise glorious noise!

The latest edition of the Cold Waves Festival, which I’ve unfortunately just learned that I’ve been missing for many years, is taking place with all the bands listed above September 25-26 in the Windy City, home to this view:

september-sunset-chicago_small

…and this burger

Kuma_slayer_burger

…and this bar:

EXIT

And in the gorgeous weather of two nights in late September, it’ll be home to this:

…this…

…this…

…and this…

…among many other unassailably superbadasscool acts.

That’s it, really. If you’re around Chicago, go buy tickets now. Or, if for some reason don’t enjoy punishing your brain with bleak industrial/noise and the like, continue going about your day being a lolbuttz.

  • Speaking of Chicago, I will be there this weekend. I wonder if there are any shows worth seeing??? hmmm…..

    SM

    • Weekend Nachos is probably playing in some crust punk’s basement.

      • that sure sounds ….*wait for it*…. cheesy.

        SM

        • Ahmed Johnson The Reef Eater

I’m dying of laughter right now.

          • Sir Tapir the Based™

SOMEONE CALL 911! We can’t lose him!

          • The Beargod

            *calls 911*
Hey, how can I help you?
            *ah, fuck it*

          • *terrified voice*
We have our own Janitor Duggan, formerly known as Eddie Trunk Jr.; you know, the classic rock lover..

Please, help us.. He’s.. Dying of laughter.. He’s laughing too loud!!!
            *sounds of laughter*

          • Pagliacci is Kvlt O)))
          • Does Finland use 911 for emergencies??

          • Sir Tapir the Based™

            We have 112.

          • Ahmed Johnson The Reef Eater

            It was a joke.

          • Dr. W.’s Tentacles

            Hint: he knows.

          • Ahmed Johnson The Reef Eater

I can never tell if he is serious or not.

          • Dr. W.’s Tentacles
          • If it is any consolation- I thought you were being serious. lol

          • Ahmed Johnson The Reef Eater

I was laughing really hard at that pun and then I was laughing so hard at Link’s joke that I was crying.

          • Tyree
          • Ahmed Johnson The Reef Eater

I love A Christmas Story but I hate this character. I heard he ended up becoming a waiter at a restaurant somewhere.

          • JamesGrimm

last thing i saw him in was a resident evil movie

          • Beargod didn’t followed the joke 🙁

          • Sir Tapir the Based™

            Shhhh, no tears, only dreams.

          • The Beargod

            Örmägörd, I’ve been had.

          • Sir Tapir the Based™

            Really? I didn’t realise that.

          • Taylor Jong Un
          • Sir Tapir the Based™
          • Ahmed Johnson The Reef Eater

Call 1-900-909-9900! Don’t really but it was the WCW Hotline when they existed.

        • I don’t think I’m off base here.

          http://youtu.be/IFTXshg29No

          • JamesGrimm

            I dont get it.

          • If you are familiar with places such as ABC No Rio in NYC, that’s what I’m referring to. That’s where a lot of these bands like Weekend Nachos sometimes play. Hope that helps.

          • JamesGrimm

            mhm.

          • Tyree

This picture of John Hoffman should be used for TOH’s next Photo Chop:

    • Taylor Jong Un

Check out Chicago Reader’s website for that one. If you’re in Hyde Park (my old neighborhood) on a Sunday, there’s a really good/free jazz night up at the Woodlawn Tap, on 55th and Woodlawn. Lol, you go to ANY of the 3 bars there and mention me, they’ll know exactly who you’re talking about.

  • The Beargod

    Frontline Assembly still exists?

    • *BACK TO THE FRONT*

    • i dunno but Implode was the rocket back in the day! and it featured sound bytes from the amazing Event Horizon!!!

      • JamesGrimm

        “amazing”

      • CyberneticOrganism

Event Horizon is the shit, and fuck off nowadays anyone who says otherwise

    • Taylor Jong Un

Yep, they’ve never stopped, either. And still pumping out a new side project every 2 seconds and producing.

  • This should be really good and Kuma’s is fantastic.

Especially if Pop Will Eat Itself brings out the giant novelty instruments.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76wSk1j02_4

  • Dr. W.’s Tentacles

I definitely wouldn’t mind being at this. I wonder if there’s a conference in Chicago around that time…

    • Taylor Jong Un

McCormick Place has them all year round. That’s not all too far from the Wrigleyville area.

  • Ahmed Johnson The Reef Eater

I’ll continue my dad being a lolbuttz. Out of all these bands I am only a fan of Godflesh.

  • JamesGrimm

Front line was my first concert in 2006 at Peabodys. put on a great show.

    • in Ohio?

    • Taylor Jong Un

I’ve been a fan for about 20 years. I swear, those two have the most side projects of ANY band on earth!

      • JamesGrimm

        Project .44 were tits too.

  • Tyree

Wow, I haven’t listened to Lustmord in a long while. Always reminded me of the much bleaker side of Dead Can Dance.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pw2k5wDKstM

  • Maik Beninton

Can someone explain Author & Punisher for me.
    Is this industrial white noise?

    • Guacamole Jim

I wouldn’t call it “white noise” since there are definite pitches and conventional rhythm, though thoroughly distorted. It’s industrial, and influenced by noise music for sure.

      • Sir Tapir the Based™

Sounds like my kind of jam.

        • Guacamole Jim

Me too. It’s really awesome, in a disgusting and oppressive way.

          • Dr. W.’s Tentacles

I really enjoy it. He has stated that he uses his own machines rather than a computer because he feels that music needs tension and pain to sound authentic.

          • Guacamole Jim

Wait, so he builds machines to produce the sound himself??

          • Dr. W.’s Tentacles
          • Guacamole Jim

This is so cool. I am now all about this.

          • Maik Beninton

Now people with a engineering degree will try to make music like this.

          • Guacamole Jim

            I am cool with that.

          • Maik Beninton

            I’m loving it.

          • Guacamole Jim

Me too!! This is artistically amazing, from a conceptual point of view. The use of machines and samples, being controlled by a person but with the sounds of the oppressive industrial, technological world is perfectly representative of our society.

          • We are our own pupeteers!

          • JamesGrimm

            and a minor in L A…lol

          • Taylor Jong Un

That’s how Aphex Twin’s always done it.

    • I saw him at Housecore. He builds all kinds of cool looking doohickeys to trigger the sounds he makes. It’s fun to watch but it doesn’t do much for me musically.

  • The Beargod

Sorta unrelated. I just checked this from ThisToiletTuesday. Pretty fharcin nice doom and violin.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkPSTxlMSOw

    • JamesGrimm

      more style than substance.

  • This is not my jam.

    I’m lolbuttz 🙁

But this Author & Punishment is pasable, to my tastes.

How are the live concert on this genre?

  • TRVE METAL FESTIVAL. But seriously, another great chicago area fest that’s happening THIS weekend.

    http://www.ragnarokkrmetal.com/

    • JamesGrimm

we got some satan fest thing coming to the Agora.

      • Are you from Cleveland then?

        SM

        • JamesGrimm

          Alliance.

          • JamesGrimm

            near Canton….

          • JamesGrimm

            ……near Akron…..lol

          • Sweet, man. That solves it!

            SM

        • JamesGrimm

opened for Lizzy Borden when the A reopened.

          • I saw In Flames at the Agora in 07. That was a terribly long drive home afterwards. It was a neat place though!

          • JamesGrimm

            where you from?

          • 40 mins north of Dayton, in the booming metropolis of Ludlow Falls, lol.

          • JamesGrimm

            jesus, thats a drive.

          • Yeah, my wife (gf at the time) bought them for us. I was still fun though. It was In Flames, All That Remains, and Gojira. It was a stacked show!

          • JamesGrimm

Hell of a show. got to see Gojira recently. saw ATR at “ohio metal fest”, have yet to see flames. goin to Ensiferim and korpakallani next.

          • Taylor Jong Un

I grew up (partly) right outside of Cincinnati. Great music scene, but fuck is that town a fucking shithole! Dunno if it’s as bad as Cleveland, since I’ve only been there a couple of times.

          • JamesGrimm

Its the poorest city in the nation.

          • Taylor Jong Un

That’d be Flint, MI actually. You know, the home of one of the guys from our beloved King 810 lol.

          • JamesGrimm

            changed last year. flints 3.

          • Taylor Jong Un

Uh oh, there goes King 810’s career!

          • JamesGrimm

            career?

          • Taylor Jong Un

Haha even with the huge push from Roadrunner and touring with Korn and Slipknot, they’re nowhere near to making back Roadrunner’s money. I very highly doubt RR is going to pick them up for another CD.

          • JamesGrimm

350,000. that a hell of a bill to foot.

          • Taylor Jong Un

Especially since even the nu metal crowd isn’t exactly buying into them and their numbnut antics.

          • I remember you saying that. Fun stuff, man

          • Ahmed Johnson The Reef Eater

            Lucky! I love them!

          • JamesGrimm

It was pretty bad. no one was there.

          • Ahmed Johnson The Reef Eater

Really? Virtually no one showed up? That angers me. Lizzy Borden does an awesome live show.

          • JamesGrimm

it was us and 3 bands, plus about 8 people.

          • Ahmed Johnson The Reef Eater

            Damnit. That depresses me.

      • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

        Hells Headbash 2.

    • Between The Buried & Smee

      I’m going to this!

  • Taylor Jong Un

COCKSUUUUUUUUUUUUUURE (not to mention an article about my beloved hometown!).

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EjBtH2JFjw

  • I really wish I was near Chicago at this moment. I freaking love Lustmord.

    • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

I really wish I was near Chicago at this moment. I freaking love Chicago!

      • cosigned! the food, oh lordy the food…

        • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

          Yes o yes!!

        • Sir Tapir the Based™

You don’t know what food is untill you taste Finnish food.

          • I’ve had fenn uusto. Does that count?

          • Sir Tapir the Based™

I do enjoy good leipäjuusto with cloudberry jam. Did you like it?

          • Hell, yes. I like my cheese squeaky.

Being from Wisconsin automatically makes one an expert on cheese…at least by North American standards haha.

          • CyberneticOrganism

TOH meetup in New Glarus, WI

      • I’ve never been. I want to try their pizza so much.

        • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

o man its awesome..I miss it!

        • CyberneticOrganism

Let me know when you visit, you can ride along while I search the city for Sarah Connor.

    • old_man_doom

Lustmord is my go-to soundtrack for reading anything from HP Lovecraft. I bet it would be incredible live

    • CyberneticOrganism

Amen dude, Lustmord is one of my all time favorite artists ever.

  • Taylor Jong Un

The Exit’s decent (way too many furry-booted, funny weaves sporting psuedo goths for my taste), but a few blocks from The Metro, on the corner of Belmont and Sheffield, is my all time fave bar, Big City Tap. Plenty of drink specials, and you can find ANYTHING on their jukebox (I even found Punto Omega on there, which is unheard of in Chicago). Plus so so many good eats around there! I personally recommend Sinbad’s, which is right up on Belmont and Sheffield as well. Oh, and tons of gay bars in the area since Boystown is right there.

    • Taylor Jong Un

Good god, that was awful! I’d still pee in her butt though, or maybe be all gentleman-like and surprise her with a Cambodian Creamsicle.

      • Dr. W.’s Tentacles

Or, you know, treat her like a human being.

        • would take to Olive Garden / 10

          • JamesGrimm

            lmao

          • Dr. W.’s Tentacles

            McNulty +1

          • Taylor Jong Un

Would take her to 7-11 for some gas station sushi.

        • Taylor Jong Un

Hehe, you know my Deuce Bigalow-esque sense of humor by now! 😉

          • Dr. W.’s Tentacles

You’re right. I should expect this sort of thing.

          • Taylor Jong Un

It’s all good. I’ll still love ya in the morning! I’ll still be your…..

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4QnalIHlVc

PS, at least I’m joking around. I’m sure you’ve seen the general opinions of women on Metal Injection and Metal Sucks! Terrorizer is even worse, if you can imagine that.

          • Dr. W.’s Tentacles

Oh I know. The way women are typically treated on metal forums is pretty deplorable.

          • Taylor Jong Un

            Yup!

        • Guacamole Jim

          Dude, sluts* aren’t people.**

*sluts – all women who won’t suck my dick

**the views expressed in this comment do not reflect the personal views of Guacamole Jim or his parent corporation Toilet ov Hell, and should be read in a sarcastic and parodic manner.

          • JamesGrimm

            ^always

          • Taylor Jong Un

*Jim’s butt pics do reflect our opinions, however, someway, somehow*

          • Dr. W.’s Tentacles

            He’s going rogue.

          • Guacamole Jim

I still don’t know how I got away with that. I submitted it really late, though, and I have this feeling Joe didn’t have time to do anything else.

          • Taylor Jong Un

It would’ve looked like the Baltimore protests in here if he would’ve refused! Toileteers demand our Rob Schneider-given right to bruised male buttocks!

        • CyberneticOrganism

Would stare at from across the room but not say anything/10

  • Tyree

Some of you like me have been on a doom kick today. So, the new Sea Witch album got released today as well. Sludgy blackened doom out of Nova Scotia.

If you end up going CyberneticOrganism, I wish you a good time!

    • CyberneticOrganism

      Thanks brah #brolo

      • Taylor Jong Un

Enjoy! Hit me up if you’re wondering about good eats, venues, or if you simply get lost lol.

  • J.R.

I’ve been to Chicago once. That is all.

    • Taylor Jong Un

I’d say visit it again, and go with what you read in the Chicago Reader versus the bullshit tourist pamphlets. Most everyone knows the major sites to see, and if you’re downtown, you can’t miss ’em. Take a ride for a couple of hours on the 151 Sheridan bus, and you’ll get a magnificent view of all that and alot more.

I can’t say enough about Chicago, despite all it’s problems. It’s still home in my heart!

      • J.R.

We took a Greyhound tour which was a mess, but still pretty cool. We met some friends of my parents up there and they showed us around pretty well, and by that I mean I ate a butt ton of deep dish.
I do plan on coming back with my cousin and doing all the museums etc.
edit: surprise picture of me. Didnt tell it too attach….but yes we did the Willis Tower and that was neat!

        • Taylor Jong Un

Ride the 151 Sheridan, trust me! And if you get a chance, catch the 6th Jeffery bus over to my old neighborhood (Hyde Park. Stop off on the 51st street stop). If I were still there, trust me, you and the Toileteers would have a place to throw down!

          • J.R.

Hyde park certainly sounds familiar! We did get dropped off at some park with this weird botanical garden. It was pretty interesting. Smelled good. Very floral.

          • Taylor Jong Un

That was probably the Lincoln Park Botanical, right off of Sheridan and Diversy.
Hyde Park probably sounds familiar because of Obama’s house and The University Of Chicago. Great area, even though they’ve been getting rid of most of the things that make the area unique over the years.

  • Virgil the Ghost Poet

It is nice to see someone who loves industrial besides myself. Also people need to listen to Cocksure. Best 90’s industrial album I’ve heard in a long time. It featers the guys who put on this fest the cracknation guys and Chris Connelly from Revolting Cocks and Ministry fame.

    • Taylor Jong Un

Yep! You know I loves me some industrial (PS, got the Bestias De Asalto interview submitted) and have a long history with it. Good new bands are far and few between though, sadly. Wax Trax got reactivated by Jim Nash’s daughter btw, so hopefully some of that old school glory will be coming on back!

  • Lacertilian

    want that burger NAOW

  • Taylor Jong Un

Oh, and I’ll give a warning to ya folks that are riding out there and wanting to eat at Kuma’s: GET THERE EARLY! As in right when they open early. Otherwise you’ll be waiting anywhere from 45 minutes to a few hours to get a seat. They even made Lady Gaga wait 2 hours to get a seat (yes, I hate her music too, but it’s a grand example of how they don’t waiver for anyone on their rules).

    • CyberneticOrganism

I plan on getting there as early as possible, filling up on meat and Zombie Dust and achieving a new level of enlightenment as Lustmord and A&P punish my face.
