Check out FUCKED UP’s horrifically frustrating new music video “Year of the Hare”

If you can somehow figure it out.

Are you fellas hip to Fucked Up? Since 2001, these Canadians have been mad prolific at releasing hardcore punk (and high-concept pop, and prog, and slowed-down versions of albums, and fake compilations of made-up bands from the 70s that sound awesome, and English pop covers, and Christmas songs, and all kinds of out-there stuff).

Since 2006 the band has been putting out a 12″ record for each sign of the Zodiac. Every one of these records contains 10+ minute art rock concoctions that allow the band to explore (even further) outside of their hardcore roots. This year, the band is releasing Year of the Hare, a 21-minute labyrinth of sounds. What better way to promote it than with an interactive music video that is completely fucking impossible to complete?

Navigate your Netscape over to Fucked Up’s website and click the lil bunny to “play” the music video/game. Beware: it is so difficult and nefarious, you’d think it was devised by some kind of devious horror movie type.

sawman

It takes me back to the bitter tears I cried as a child after plonking down hard cash to rent interactive cut scene videogames like Out of This World and Braindead 13 (or Dragon’s Lair for the old-timers) and being literally far too stupid to get past the first death animation. Why would anyone do this?? According to lead guitarist Mike Haliechuk:

“The theme of ‘Year of the Hare’ focuses on time, and becoming lost in it. The modern way of life, getting stuck in time-sucking gadgets and trends, stress and scheduling. This unsolvable video we thought was an appropriate way to premiere the song online – in small little chunks of time that are impossible to navigate through, you can only get lost in them and try to find your way out.”

Fucked Up will be on tour later this month with a string of very special shows. To promote Year of the Hare the band is expanding to 9-pieces and they’ll perform songs from the Zodiac series (many of which they’ve never performed live). If they’re coming your way, don’t miss it. It’s a heckin’ good time.

  • These are tasty tunes, Joe! Thanks man!

Just announced about an hour ago– Pissgrave debut full length will be released in August, artwork is continuation of “human soup” photo from the demo. More details to follow. Byah! Kinda NSFW (because it’s disgusting)

    • Tyree

BYAH!!! Hopefully this will get an actual CD release this time around.

      • Howard Dean

I think it probably will. I imagine Profound Lore will release it (or will outsource it to other labels) on all formats (CD, vinyl, digital, cassette).

        • Tyree

I’d imagine so. Awesome news man, thanks. You saw them live right, with Dead Congregation? If so how were they live?

          • Howard Dean

Fucking awesome, really, really loud and brutal. They play that old school style of death metal, kind of like early Deicide, but it’s way more primal and ugly, and live they were killer. The vocalist, who uses twin mics/a pitchshifter, is pretty intense–his eyes were nearly bugging out of his head. They were definitely the loudest band of the night, but it didn’t detract from their music.

          • Tyree

Fuck yes! I really liked their demo from last year. Really raw and abrasive sounding shit. I’ve heard from a few people that they were loud as fuck live (Awesome). Definitly looking forward to hearing the album. Also, I’m glad they got picked up by a bigger label; well deserved.

          • Howard Dean

Me too. I was pumped to hear Profound Lore snagged them. I actually sent PL an email about them last year. I thought it might happen eventually, as they signed Alraune last year, and both Alraune and Pissgrave were on Graceless Recordings. So PL definitely scours the underground for talent.

    • Scrimm

      Gross.

      • The W.

        My thought exactly.

      • Howard Dean

        This is true.

I believe the backstory on this photo was that an old guy used an electric water heater to keep his bathwater warm. However, the dude died in the tub, the heater kept running, and he essentially got cooked for days (weeks?). Pretty fucking gnarly and disgusting.

        • The W.

This is a real photo? barf.

          • Howard Dean

Yes, I think it’s real. The cover on their demo was real, too I believe.

I remember this photo (and another one that showed the entire tub) from one of those “spooky/gross weird death” type websites back in the day (maybe Rotten .com?)

          • The W.

I remember Rotten. Browsing gore isn’t something I find myself wanting to do as an adult.

          • Howard Dean

Me neither. But as an impressionable teenager, it was a badge of honor to say “Yeah, I saw that disgusting shit. Big deal!” Now I see it on album covers and it’s enough for me.

          • The W.

Same. I have a very distinctive memory of a dude who got impaled by a utility pole.

          • Howard Dean

The one that is permanently seared into my brain is the “Motorcycle Accident” from Rotten. It wasn’t actually a motorcycle accident, I think it was a failed shotgun suicide. The dude was still alive and in the hospital–conscious and with his eyes open (or whatever was left of them). The entire lower part of his face was pretty much gone. One of the most brutal things I’ve ever seen. That one haunted me as a teenager.

I can’t even imagine some of the things an ER doc or nurse sees. It must really burn them out.

          • The W.

            Blechhh.

          • Guacamole Jim

This is getting into Fishgod territory.

          • Scrimm

I remember that. Saw a couple gnarly work accidents in the Army. Not good times.

          • KJU’s Dancing Testicle Teethys

I saw one on Rotten way back when of a PCP addict literally scratching his face off bit by bit. Ummmmmmmm, yeah…….

          • Tyree

There was a prison murder video from Venezuela I saw once which will never leave my mind. Basically a group of prisoners were stabbing and trying to cut this cellmates throat with a couple of dull butter knives. It took like 6 minutes to finally kill the guy. Must have been agonizing.

          • Tyree

I had a buddy of mine over the other week and he insisted that I watch some ISIS decapitation videos with him. I regret that dearly. Fucking horrible shit. I kinda grew out of that phase.

          • Scrimm

I hate those videos, disturbing shit on many levels. The mexican chainsaw one sticks in my head.

          • Tyree

Yup. Horrifying. I definitely think of that one often.

          • Howard Dean

The Mexican videos are way worse than the ISIS/al-Qaeda ones. Those cartels are horrendously fucking brutal.

Although I’ve got to say that footage of ISIS burning that Jordanian pilot to death was horrid. Those motherfuckers.

          • Tyree

One of the worst cartel pictures I’ve ever seen was this corpse that was left in the streets of Mexico with seriously a hundred knives stuck in his body and face.

          • /wantstoseeit
            /doesn’twanttoseeit

          • Tyree

I have it in one of my designs I did. (Refresh for image). Upper left of design.

          • They left the knives in him??? That is brutal

            GL

          • Tyree

Yup, it’s stylized for the design. But the actual image is brutal looking.

          • Howard Dean

            Fuck. Brutal.

It’s crazy, but shit like that happens every day there. When the criminal cartels completely rule the roost, there’s no one that can stop them. Pretty sad state of events.

          • Scrimm

            I refrained from watching that.

          • Howard Dean

That was a good decision. A bunch of less-than-completely-legitimate online news companies decided to post the video in full. It was really horrible.

          • CT-12

I really hate how callous and dehumanizing those videos are. If my brother was caught on video getting decapitated or something and people felt the need to watch it for some “gore badass” boner, I’d fucking flip out.

          • Scrimm

            yep

          • more beer

I was talking to a friend last weekend who is a surgeon in a trauma unit. He see`s that shit on a daily basis. Just his descriptions of some things were a little much to handle.

          • Scrimm

            Me either.

          • KJU’s Dancing Testicle Teethys

I remember Steakandcheese.com from back in the day. Some hilarious shit in a morbid way, but a whole lotta shit just a little too fucked up for my tastes.

        • KJU’s Dancing Testicle Teethys

I think that was on 1000 Ways To Die, IIRC.

          • Howard Dean

Probably was. It’s certainly an odd (and horrible) death story.

          • KJU’s Dancing Testicle Teethys

And incredibly stupid of the guy to do. Darwin Award!

        • KJU’s Dancing Testicle Teethys

I misread that. I thought you meant he put an electric heater in the tub until I reread your post. DOH!

      • That is one of those pictures I question whether it is really “fake” or not. Gross indeed.

        GL

    • Thanks for putting this in spoiler. You’re a good man.

    • Tyree

One up vote and 2 downvotes duder. Well done.

      • Howard Dean

I’ve really chapped some asses among the ToH regulars. I noticed that the Waterboy gif I posted on the Iron Bonehead post now has 4 downvotes. Hahaha.

I’d prefer if people just told me to fuck off. At least then I’d know who was actually pissed and what was actually bothering them. But down votes are easier, I know.

        • I think it more of a ploy to get under your skin – since you are vocal about getting them. Shitty either way. But that is my theory.

          GL

          • AKFP,

Inglorious Bastards was good! I little long, but good.

            GL

          • That’s a Bingo!

          • Howard Dean

It could definitely be something like that. I know I get under people’s skin, too when I talk about bands the community would rather ignore, or when I don’t tow the line and agree with the prevailing community opinion, so that would be a way to counteract that, I guess. Kind of petty and chickenshit, but I get it.

I don’t actually check down votes on all my comments, but some times it’s easy to notice (like when the comment is below everything else even though it has upvotes, haha). It’s more funny than annoying at this point.

          • While I don’t downvote you seeing as imaginary internet points are irrelevant, I would say it’s because you often times come off as extremely pretentious and many times have not respected people’s posts.

          • Howard Dean

That’s probably true, and I know many people have been less than happy with me–you included. The one thing about me is that I’ve never been afraid to say the hard, unpopular things that will make people unhappy. People are welcome to be the same way with me. During RotW a couple weeks ago, Spear said he thought the riff I picked was shit. That’s fine. At least he was talking about the music and was willing to say it. I respect that. I respect that you said this to me.

I agree. Internet points are irrelevant. You can, however, use the upvote/downvote button as a gauge of whether someone agrees with something you said or not. It would be easier if people just said it–like you just did–but a lot of people can’t or won’t do that, which is too bad.

          • The W.

I’ve been trying to stay out of arguments here in the comments, but I appreciate this response to him. Really I just want everyone to be civil and respect each other.

          • Scrimm

            Even Randal?

          • The W.

He has to give respect to earn it.

          • Scrimm

Srs though what you said is important.

          • The W.

I’ve talked with him on Facebook and told him to let me know if I ever go too far. Really, I care very much about this blog and the people who write for it. I want people who write stuff to get the respect they deserve, even if others don’t like the music.

          • KJU’s Dancing Testicle Teethys

I can’t think of anyone I’ve been actually pissed off at on here, to be honest. That Bob asshole was a nuisance, but he didn’t last long.

          • I can think of one guy, but he was mostly in the facebook group.

          • The W.

And you had every right to be pissed.

          • dude i’m sorry!

          • CT-12

I would like to know more about this situation, but feel free to not respond if you don’t want to share.

          • Scrimm

As they should. Writing is hard work, and I always respect that even when I may not enjoy the subject matter much.

          • The W.

This is why I’ve expressed multiple times recently that I regret the way things went down with MS. Crapping all over someone else’s work, even if I don’t think that work is very good, is not something I’m proud of.

          • Tyree

I don’t think some of those posts I would call “Work”.

          • The W.

Haha, that’s fair. But I know some people here do get disheartened when they check the comments on their post and immediately see something like, “Wow this sucks.” or some other video.

          • Tyree

Understandable. I try and be as honest as I can with my comments. If I dislike something, I try and at least justify why I do (Maybe I don’t sometimes, but I at least try and be some what on topic). Also, I don’t call some ones writing shit on this blog, NEVER. If people don’t appreciate honesty then that’s sad I think. People should be open, this is a community really. I could care a less if some one calls my post shit as long as they justify why. Whatever, I’m just rambling here.

          • The W.

I get what you’re saying. I think it’s good for all of us to maybe self-assess sometimes and think, “Will saying or posting this make me an asshole?” I know I need to ask myself that sometimes.

I can handle criticism. Part of my job is writing professionally and speaking at conferences, so I can deal with people have critiques of what I’m putting out there, but I’d hate for someone new to want to try writing for the blog only to get crapped on.

          • Shrimp in a Pizza Box

It’d definitely be sad if someone gave up writing just because of someone shitting on their post, but without criticism people will never get better at doing what they do. If the “criticism” is just “dis sux lel”, then that is just lacking respect for the author, but if the critic actually justifies the criticism I think it’s perfectly fine.

          • The W.

            I agree with that.

          • Tyree

Agreed. I went to design school. Criticism was harsh as hell, but it made me a much better artist and designer.

          • The W.

I was presenting some research to a room of several hundred people in DC in January. After I finished answering questions regarding my presentation, the next guy got up and was like, “I like W. presented, but it’s totally unnecessary and irrelevant.” I think he’s wrong btw, but it still seemed kind of a dick move.

          • Tyree

Some people are just dicks. You can tell them apart from the others.

          • The W.

            True.

          • It seems as though most conferences are just place for people to flex their intelligence muscles. The first day is always the worst – people making stupid comments – trying to be badass’s. I had a room full of Germans one time. They were ruthless.

          • The W.

GL, I think part of the problem too was that I was talking about ethics. A lot of professional engineers think technology is a good substitute for ethics.

          • Since the “morals” behind technology are derived from ethic perception – I would tend to agree with you. I am looking forward to reading your dissertation.

          • The W.

Thanks, man! I submitted a journal paper on Saturday that was a continuation of the ethics discussion. I hope it gets accepted.

          • Tyree

            Engineers are assholes 😉

I work with a bunch of em, ethics are thrown out the window.

          • The W.

            They’re a special breed, Tyree.

          • CT-12

This is definitely true. When I sent my first article in to Joe, he emailed me and had said “hey man, this isn’t super good, could you give it another lookover?” in about the nicest way possible, so I reworked it and the end result turned out much better than the original. I hadn’t wrote anything in so long that when I looked back at the original draft a while later, I was laughing because it sucked so bad. So, constructive criticism helps, but it doesn’t hurt to be nice about it as well.

          • CT-12

This is definitely true. I remember when I posted a show review for Summer Slaughter, and it seemed some of the comments were more obsessed over the fact that the Faceless headlined and thought that was absurd. And while I respect that people are entitled to their opinion and can post whatever in the comments, it seemed pretty dismissive of the fact that I actually put a lot of time and thought into the review (and I rarely even post articles on here too).

          • CT-12

A-fucking-men to that W. It’s very, very easy to criticize a piece of work when you didn’t have to do it. That’s why I (usually) never negatively criticize art or articles I don’t like, because I still understand that they both take work to do.

          • The W.

I wish you’d write something again, CT.

          • CT-12

Thanks man! I actually have a “Crossing the Thrasold” article done (with the blessing of Simon Phoenix), I just need to edit it up a little bit but I’ve been sick and have been having weird problems with my mouth/jaw that have kept me off track (aka “gave me an excuse to procrastinate” haha). Also working on a “list” of sorts, and after that I want to focus all my attention back onto the Gimme Something to Watch column, and hopefully get at least 1 porcelain throne done sometime afterwards.

          • Yea I’ve been pretty ticked at you before, but I’m not one to hold a grudge. Life is too short for petty shit like that. At the end of the day, I’d like to think we’re all friends through our love of metal. I think the reason people resort to downvoting you is because actually commenting how they feel could potentially result in an argument and we try to keep the comments a friendly place. At the same time, sometimes people just need to vent and I’m sure at one point or another some person will just flip their shit and let it all out.

          • Guacamole Jim

I fucking hate all of you.

            I’m sure someone will, too.

I try to vent slowly so that I don’t completely lose my shit. It’s easier to let out little flairs of angst (and cause a stir in the process) then to just completely implode (and burn every bridge and set fire to the countryside).

            Many thanks, GL!

T’was a pretty good year for production in New England and Quebec. The brutish winter followed by the extremely temperate and delayed spring helped a lot.

          • Scrimm

I always took any brashness as very tongue in cheek and humorous. Also, felt really bad after giving you shit once in the fb group.

          • Howard Dean

Honestly, no worries about giving me shit–that time or anytime. I have strong enough opinions about metal that I can stand to get some pushback. That’s healthy.

I would agree that a lot of the brashness (especially the continued over-the-top disdain for tech death/overly dramatic glorifying of Bolt Thrower and those similar types of things I did/do) I put out there is totally tongue-in-cheek, and is supposed to be humorous. I’m not that much of trve metal warrior, haha. However, I know that it’s probably not always easy for people to differentiate between an act I’m putting on like that or when I’m legitimately turned up and irritated (like when we focus on how a lot of musicians are shitty people rather than talking about their music).

          • Scrimm

States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your
miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only
you could have known what unholy retribution your little clever comment
was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking
tongue. But you couldnt, you didnt, and now youre paying the price, you
goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it.
            Youre fucking dead, kiddo.”

I can’t even imagine how many downvotes I got on the Darkthrone Porcelain Throne article. I’m more than sure it nullified any and all upvotes I’ve ever gotten.

          • Shrimp in a Pizza Box

To be fair, Darkthrone isn’t that good.

          • Tyree

To be fair, Darkthrone is great.

          • Shrimp in a Pizza Box

To be fair, Darkthrone is great, if the minimum to be “great” is being as good as Slipknot.

          • Tyree

Your comment has be all sorts of mind fucked right now. Going to poop now and forget about this mind-boggling comment of yours shrimp.

          • Slipknot’s pretty fuckin’ good. well, there are a lot of talented musicians in the band, but good songwriting never seems to be their priority 🙂

        • Scrimm

I randomly downvote people when hammered just because. Can’t see how many I have.

          • The W.

That’s pretty funny. I haven’t been drunk in a few years, but I think the last time I was, I got on Reddit and upvoted every post I saw.

          • Scrimm

Hahahaha! I don’t get stupid drunk anymore really, maybe a couple times a year. Pretty good at knowing when to cut myself off, but it’s enough that I still have to be careful of my internet activities.

        • KJM

For what it may, or may not, be worth, it ain’t me. I like everybody here, even that silly billy who thinks I’m an Illuminati mole. If I find my jimmies getting rustled over internet stuff, I take a step back and have a vacay for a bit(as I have done in the past).

      • CT-12

Hey man, unrelated, but did you see Mgla are gonna be playing Martyrdoom festival in NYC? I thought you might be interested to know.

        • Howard Dean

          NOOO SOLAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCEE!!

          • CT-12

I need to buy “With Hearts Towards None” already. I got the Mdlosci and Further Down the Nest demos and they definitely lived up to all the hype I’ve seen about them.

          • Howard Dean

Yes. Buy soon. It’s definitely their best work to date.

          • CT-12

            Just bought in on ebay!

        • Tyree

          WOAH! Thanks!

    • CT-12

Will it only be released on 3 limited edition 8-track tapes haha?

      • Howard Dean

Only two 8-tracks, actually. And four wax cylinders.

  • Tyree

You are all fucked up. Toilet Ov Hell is all fucked up. It’s all FUBAR you NERDS!

  • This is an awesome idea! It’s very interesting to promo music with this interactive style.

There were some other bands that did this videogame stuff along the promotion of a new album, but it’s the first time I hear of a more underground band doing a interactive cutscene type. Very very good.

I didn’t like too much the music. But, it’s weird that the guitar tone is more punky. and that’s fine for me.

Also, you didn’t explained how to play it, Joe! 😛 I’m using http://www.GuacFAQS.com to learn.

    • The W.

I figured out how to cycle through the clips, but I don’t know if there’s anything else you can do.

  • Kevin Nash & Friends

I like this. I like it a lot even though the video is hard.

  • Shrimp in a Pizza Box

Puzzle video games always manage to piss me right the fuck off, even more so than other video games. Will probably listen to some of the band later.

Completely off topic: Apparently there is a /r/cutedeadgirls subreddit.
