You guys fucking love lists so we’re giving you what you want: Listmania. In between our excellent Editor’s Best-of List and our community Best-of List, I assumed that we would be all covered. Not so! We know some super hip celebs in the music industry who want to share their favorite albums of 2014 with you. Unfortunately, Tay Tay still won’t return my emails or phone calls or text massages or letters or manifestos or boiled rabbits so instead we’ve got picks from Ron Varod of Kayo Dot, Jesse Beahler of Black Crown Initiate, Gary from Sea of Bones, and our buddy The Vomit Arsonist.

Ron Varod of Kayo Dot

Anna Calvi “Strange Weather” – Even when Anna covers a song that I’m not fond of (Tv on the Radio’s “Wolf Like Me” or Beyonce’s “Naughty GIrl”) the results are always amazing. So I’m not surprised that this EP of cover songs is just as addictive and high quality as her full lengths of original tunes.

Dama/Libra “Claw” – Beautiful and droney and even has a few really fun Wes Anderson movie sounding parts, but in a really awesome refreshing way!

Indian “From All Purity” – Really simple and nasty, like a whole record of the sludgy Converge tracks augmented by lots of noise.

Bohren Und Der Club of Gore “Piano Nights” – My first 3 listens I was snowed in the day before we did our first day of tracking for “Coffins on Io” so I’ll always have that really cool association when I listen to this record. Every time I listen to this record I find myself saying “oh yeahh” when that reverb-ey surf guitar comes in later in the record.

Pink Floyd “Endless River” – This record is a perfect final chapter for the best band ever. So what if the lyrics to the final song are kinda cheesy? It’s an almost all instrumental record of Dave Gilmour guitar solos and Richard Wright synth solos, so awesome.

Geryon S/T – I think this came out physically this year, really creative and awesome Drum/Bass Guitar death metal, best band in NYC right now.

ÄÄNIPÄÄ “Through A Pre-Memory” – This came out 2013 but I only heard of it this year. Dubin and O’Malley team up for a few tracks so it’s almost like a new Electro based Khanate record.

  • Death

That Äänipää albums was pretty darn good, I agree. Mika Vainio was the other main man on that album, by the way.

    • Janitor Jim Dvggan

I like the list of the guy from Black Crown Initiate.

      • I’m really busy right now but I’m just dropping in to say “you would.”

      • Death

It does have AAL, which is an instant flush.

        • Gurrp

          *instant gold

  • Howard Dean

    *flush*

    *plunger*

    *flush again*

  • I didn’t know Jesse was ex-Rings of Saturn, that was a wise choice on his part.

    • Janitor Jim Dvggan

It was wise of him. I’m happy they’re coming near me with Napalm Death and Voivod.

      • Æ (Justin Nowlin)

I had to choose between Napalm Death or seeing Behemoth. I’ve never seen Behemoth so I chose them. Sorry Barney 🙁

        • Janitor Jim Dvggan

I’m going to it because I love Voivod.

          • CT-12

            Atta boy

        • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

ND + Voivod + Exhumed + Iron Reagan + BCI = You are insane. Behemoth is a good live band, but not nearly good enough to miss THAT tour

          • Æ (Justin Nowlin)

I’ve also never seen Cannibal Corpse. That tour just fits my taste better.

          • CC’s live show is as dependable as their music catalog. no frills, but fun indeed.

          • Æ (Justin Nowlin)

I’ve heard that. I’m just excited for Behemoth man. I hear they’re awesome live!

    • Gurrp

I dunno, he might have been better off financially if he kept weedlying till he deedlied.

    • Stockhausen

I don’t believe he ever recorded, but he was the touring drummer for awhile. Also hopped on to fill in for a Jungle Rot tour. The dude is insane.

      • PrivateTwitterIsKvlt

I saw him fill in for Abigail Williams when they playing in Reading, PA. His drumming blew me away.

        • Stockhausen

Oh yeah, I forgot he toured with them too. He’s way too good. I played with his old band he had with the BCI vocalist, and we just stood at the side of the stage and gaped at him the whole time.
Love the name change by the way, hahaha.

          • PrivateTwitterIsKvlt

I’d go as far as saying he almost stole the show at the Abigail Williams gig.

  • Geryon>>>>>>>>>>

    • VVorld Peace

I’m totally with you on that. Digital was out last year, right? I remember Sockweb plugging them.

      • Yeah, but the physical came early this year. They are v v trill.

        • VVorld Peace

So we’re basically in a secret club? This is the band on Monolith Records, right?

    • Stockhausen

I was going to post this exact same thing, but then I saw that you posted this exact same thing so I did not post this exact same thing.

      • Tyree

Are you going to the post office today?

        • Stockhausen

Damn, I forgot about that Warpaint album; I actually really enjoyed it… Kill me now.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uol4GEX1DTU

  • Thanks to the bands for contributing!

  • wait, there’s new melvins? Why do I never find out about this kind of stuff?

    • Death

      It wasn’t anything special mate

    • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

You need to come here more often

  • KJM

    Sinoia Caves FTW

  • Guacamole Jim

I did really dig that new Intervals album. Tasty grooves, well-written songs, excellent musicianship. And this is the first time I’ve seen someone defend the new Pink Floyd. I’m going to have to give that a try.

    • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

JAG defended the new Pink Floyd, put it on his list even

      • Janitor Jim Dvggan

Even I can’t defend that album and I love Pink Floyd to death.

      • Guacamole Jim

Shit, I’d forgotten about that! I was distracted by being reminded of Unisonic and how good they actually are.

  • I should collect a list of power metal bands’ best of lists

  • Death
  • Æ (Justin Nowlin)

Every time I see “The Satanist” on a list I get happy 🙂

  • VVorld Peace

Thanks for sharing these lists, celebs. Some solid choices in here.

  • Howard Dean
    • I <3 Devin!

      GL

      • Howard Dean

This song off of the new album gives me goosebumps. I’ve been playing the hell out of it lately:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92_8eyfXjUQ

        • Dude, why do you think the album made my #1 of 2014! Universal Flame tops Fallout for me! They are such powerful songs!

          GL

          • Howard Dean

I remember seeing it there, and that’s one of the reasons I decided to pick it up. I had been in a deep trench of black and death metal this year, and honestly, I slept on Z2. And I’m regretting that so much.

        • It’s pretty catchy

          • My only complaint about the album is that sonically it is way too jam packed. Unfortunately I am not sure if the album would be as good if there wasn’t 7 different things to listen to at once…

            GL

          • Howard Dean

Yeah, the entire album is pretty damn catchy. I’ve always liked what Devin Townsend does, but he’s never been one of my favorites. Until recently. Now my Devin Townsend fandom is growing by the day.

          • Tyree

I’m jamming it right now. Not to bad. I like the clean female vocals a lot.

          • Tyree

            Who is it?

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

            Anneke van Giersbergen

          • Tyree

            Sexy.

          • I heard she’s going out with George Clarke.

          • Tyree
          • she has HORRIBLE taste in men.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

            Indeed, very. And a redhead

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

Anneke van Giersbergen was the only reason I ever touched The Gathering. Although I learned to appreciate the later as well.

          • PrivateTwitterIsKvlt

Anneke van Giersbergen is one of the reasons why I touch myself.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

            Mmm… Scuse me, I need to… I have the… Thing … I have a thing

          • RustyShackleford

I have pretty much no shame in my Devin Townsend fandom. The dude makes music that is fun to listen to and seems to have a hell of a lot of fun making it. Fucking love that. Yep!

          • Been a fan since ’96, and it’s simply grown in the meantime. Even his weakest records are still pretty rock solid.

          • Simon PhoenixKing

I’m not a fan of Devy musically, but his live show was some of the most fun I’ve had at a show. Jazz hands never gets old.

          • CT-12

Any recommendations? I am literally a complete newbie to DT, only heard “Juular”.

          • RustyShackleford

Everything from Strapping Young Lad, then I’d listen to the rest of Deconstruction if you dig Juular, +Ziltoid if you like the weird funny shit!

          • How do you feel about “Rejoice”? For some reason I can’t stomach that song.

          • Why is everyone just now coming out that they have listened to this album????

            GL

          • VVorld Peace

We ran a review here, boss.

          • I realize that, but asides from the article I felt like the reception/commentary was lukewarm. Thats all

            GL

          • VVorld Peace

Gotcha. I know a bunch of people liked it.

          • Edward #negrod4eva

Despite the insane amount of music our crew listens to, and the variety of it, there seems to be a couple of gems here and there that get overlooked, or like you mentioned, no one seems to talk about even if they listen to and enjoy them.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

I thought the whole Z2 goes to show how utterly exhausted HevyDevy is. He truly needs to take the break right now, and stop just talking about it.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

            Oh Yes!

          • VVorld Peace

I’m with you on that. I like a lot of his stuff, but Z2 just fell flat for me.

          • Howard Dean

Like I said, I was late picking it up this year. Had I rocked it a lot back when it came out, it would’ve been on my end of year list. I was just completely inundated and overwhelmed with keeping up on the insane amount of quality death metal released this year.

          • Howard Dean

I actually don’t mind it, though I admit that rapping bit he does near the beginning kinda threw me off. It’s… different. Still not my favorite part. It doesn’t hold up compared to the 2 or 3 tracks that immediately follow it, but it’s not too bad.

          • I think it’s the Anneke’s weirdo melody that irks me (you can hear it at the beginning, but it persists throughout the song) more than Devin’s weird rap-ish part.

        • Tyree

        • I just can’t get down with this stuff…am I doing something wrong?

        • Stockhausen

I would not have ever pegged you for a Devin Townsend fan.

          • Howard Dean

Haha, Edward/NegroD said the same thing. I may be 9/10s extreme thrash, black and death metal, but I dig a lot of diverse things with that last 1/10.

          • Stockhausen

            Last 1/10 /10>>>>

          • VVorld Peace

I’m about 9/10 skronk and grind. The other 1/10 goes to Nevermore and Giant Squid.

      • Met and interviewed him way back when. Awesome musician and really nice guy. Gene Hoglan was pretty cool too.

        • VVorld Peace

I would expect nothing less from the atomic clock.

  • @disqus_kqxyUNPxty:disqus I am still laughing about yesterdays posts. No hard fellings my hawk-hating friend??

  • Bohren Und Der Club of Gore is pretty good–it’s like being trapped in an Angelo Badalamenti/David Lynch time capsule where everything is really slow and chill and you can’t tell if something really great or really awful is about to happen.

  • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

    Äänipää and Anna Calvi FTW

    • Death

      Except for Äänipää.

  • I really really tried to give ‘The Endless River’ a chance and was bored shitless by it. It’s about as entertaining as having constipation after eating a Taco Bell 24 pack and drinking a Big Gulp of espresso.

    • YOUR NAME, FTW!

      GL

      • *take a bow and soils myself*

Sony actually pulled ‘The Interview’ altogether. Those email hacks are the gift that keeps on giving!

        • PrivateTwitterIsKvlt

I think he made a blunder getting the movie shut down. From the clips, it seems like they make him out to be a much bigger badass than he actually is.

          • Personally, I had no intention of seeing the movie. But now that there is a massive shit storm brewing over it, I wouldn’t mind seeing it.

            Also, Shitstorm. SYL!!!!!!!!

          • OldMetalHead

Agreed. Before I was thinking it’s probably a mediocre Seth Rogan movie that can wait for Netflix. Now, I’d be willing to pay something to watch it and stick it to NK.

          • KJM

Nah, I think Sony are a bunch of cowards for doing what they did, but Rogen’s movies still seem dumb to me.

          • Imagine if they would’ve released ‘Innocence Of Muslims’ in theaters. That would’ve turned out REALLY ugly in a fucking hurry!

          • zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

the m.o. of the u.n/american tax payer. funded movie studios/weinstein 911 orchestrating motherfuckers—>leans toward–

            kind of ludicrous

Who’s “The Interview” are we talking of here?

          • …Ellipsis…

          • Simon PhoenixKing

Indeed. A ruthless dictator obsessed with movies. You’re a man after my own rotted heart Kim.

Personally I want to see the movie just for the chance to see you personally snap Seth Rogen’s fat stupid beard neck and then stomp on his stupid unfunny neck beard face.

          • I forgive him, and offer him a chance to do voluntary rehabilitation through labor at one of my luxurious camps, making cupcakes, unicorns, rainbows and children’s laughter for the mighty citizens of Bester Korea.

  • Stockhausen

Well obviously Vomit Arsonist has this band on his list: “Stillingskerrkozletskynystrompetrus – Death Instruktions”
But he also had Gnawed on there, so his list is an instant winner.

    • Edward #negrod4eva

I need to listen to that Gnawed, fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

      2. Witherscape – The Inheritance

        4. Arghoslent – Incorrigible Bigotry

        5. Grand Belial’s Key – Judeobeast Assassination

        6. Van Halen – S/T

        • Edward #negrod4eva

HD IOU one email about Arghoslent. I am planning on responding to you and EE/SB when I have the proper amount of time / thought. There was another album I was going to add to those three that I posted but have forgotten about it since I have been at work. I hope it comes back to me, lol

          • Howard Dean

Was it Van Halen – S/T?

          • Edward #negrod4eva

No that I would have remembered.

          • Howard Dean

            Hahahaha.

I just BYAH!-ed one of my friends on Facebook who has very little knowledge of Toilet Ov Hell.

          • Howard Dean

I have to check myself (before I wreck myself) on a regular basis so that I don’t yell “Byah!” or tell someone they ride a hoveround.

          • Edward #negrod4eva

I told my cat the other day,

  • Tyree

John Mellencamp’s favorite album of the year is his own album.

    • Sure you’re not thinking of Geoff Tate? He’d say that even though he hasn’t released one this year, with his vest’s solo CD coming in a close second.

  • Simon PhoenixKing

I love Bohren… I didn’t even know that they released a new album this year until about a week ago though, and Belied was a bit underwhelming to me. I’ll definitely check it out.

  • Warheart

Glad to see I’m not the only metalhead that listens to Warpaint.
