  • Woodcut Records Remasters Thyrane’s Black Harmony Demo

2017 is upon us: The year in which it was once prophesied that the demo recording by your favorite Finnish slightly symphonic black metal band, Thyrane, would return to Earth to cleanse the righteous and lead the wicked to Sodom Eternal. Continue Reading

  • Voidcraeft Plays by the Rules on New Record

For the last several years, the man behind the mysterious black metal act Voidcraeft has been dutifully toiling like a reclusive cenobite to craft some of the most otherworldly and inspired extreme metal around. Drawing equally from the pools of classic second wave black metal like Paysage d’Hiver as well as the gonzo stylings of xenharmonic alchemists like Jute Gyte, Voidcraeft has been writing angular, discordant black metal at an unrelenting pace. I’ve been meaning to cover Voidcraeft for quite some time now, but it almost seems that he drops a new record just as I’ve wrapped my mind around the previous album. Most fascinating, though, is the way the multi-instrumentalist documents his own process of creation. On new EP Dogma, Voidcraeft gave himself an even more daunting challenge: create and abide by formalized rules of creation.

  • Krucyator Productions Set to Release Debut EP from Murky Death Metal Band Miserist

A few months ago, I spoke to Loïc LF of Autokrator and N.K.V.D. about his personal projects and releasing material through his own label, Krucyator Productions. At the time, Loïc hadn’t yet signed or promoted any other bands but was on the lookout for exemplary acts of extremity to push through his own label. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait long to hear the first outside act to release material through Krucyator. On February 13th, Krucyator is set to release the debut EP of Miserist, an unwholesome, grimy death metal project from Australia. As the man behind the project is anonymous and wishes to remain soon, I messaged Loïc to get the scoop.

  • This Toilet Tuesday (1/3/17)

Welcome to the first Toilet Tuesday of 2017! Last year was excellent for extreme metal, and I’m looking forward to what this year will bring in the music world. This week’s offerings are somewhat slim, but there’s some good jams to be had. W. and I have picked out a couple standouts; let us know if there are more that deserve to be heard! Continue Reading

  • This Toilet Tuesday (12/20/16)

Winter is very nearly upon us, and I’m about ready to die. Christmas is right around the corner, and the thought of having to spend time with other humans is not terribly appealing. More worthless political bickering, more questioning of why I don’t plan on having kids while I’m surrounded by screaming children, more passive-aggressive crap flung between family members… Just let it end. Fortunately, we’ve been provided with an excellent soundtrack for all this nonsense this week, and W. and Stockhausen have picked out a couple of the best. Check those out and come wallow with me. • This Toilet Tuesday (12/13/16)

Trying to keep up with new music is painful. Just when you think that it’s starting to slow down and give you some time to clear out your considerable backlog, Grafvitnir and Teitanblood decide to drop new albums in the same week. Plus, you’ve come across a handful of bands you’ve never heard of that have some awesome songs out, and your backlog just got that much bigger. You may never catch up, but at least you’re in good company; W. and I have picked out a couple of the choicest cuts to save you some time. Let us know what else we need to hear, that we may all suffer in solidarity. Continue Reading

  • Mesarthim Deliver on the Ominous Warning of Absence: The Great Filter Is Here

Back in August, our intrepid prog sleuth/space aficionado Joaquin Stick decoded the Morse code titles on spacy black metal band Mesarthim‘s terrific Absence (Papa Joe’s AOTY) to find an ominous warning. Stringing the song titles together and decrypting the code, Joaquin was able to produce the following text: “The Great Filter Approaches.” Now, at the end of 2016, The Great Filter is here.

Oh, you thought you were done with music in 2016? Think again, nerds! The next Tuesday is always on the horizon, and the metal must flow. Take a break from arguing over your objectively wrong and terrible lists for a few minutes to jam some new tunes; we’ll all be happier for it. You just might find something you like, too.
